so yea not much work done, but the motor is just about ready to pull.
tried shinning up one of the covers for a test, not sure if i will leave it chrome or powdercoat it. i used and sos pad to clean it up a bit.
before
after
this was really nasty, also noticed the crushed washer on the sprocket, but don't think it is affecting anything.
i also removed the motor. used a jack to help the top out
then lifted it out, wow it was heavy.
i really like this pic, ready for the teardown.
pretty much stripped
started to remove some things
and then closed up shop for the night
took apart the carbs tonight. not a single screw came of the top caps, all had to be drilled. on the float bowls i got all but one out. so i will be getting new screws for the whole lot. should i buy from somewhere like Z1(http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1661) or just the hardware store?
one of the diaphragms was torn in a couple spots. is this going to be a big problem? should i replace it or even both? and are they usually kind of brittle feeling. mine feel a little stiff.
here are the carbs all taken apart and ready to be cleaned.
i think i am gonna soda blast them. if you haven't heard of it. i made one of these: http://www.aircooledtech.com/tools-o.../soda_blaster/
here is mine
i already started on the tops, and it works great, doesn't remove the pitting but gets em super clean. i ran out of baking soda so i will post more pictures of the final result.

progress! so i fiddled a bit today. i hooked up a jump pack and got it going when i would take off the pack to put the airbox on it would die. so i made a make shift filter with two paper towels. i couldn't believe it, revved right up! i was surprised. here is a vid. so how does is sound?
__________________took it around the block to see how she rides. not bad. the carbs could use some tuning, but everything else seems ok. here is the vid. sorry about the wind
now for the real work!!! time to TEAR DOWN
ust a couple more pics of the bike in "slow" progress. shows the condition a bit.
ok so this will probably be a long ongoing post, as i don't always have tons of time to work on it, and money is REALLY tight. but i did get the bike for free, so that helps a ton.
the bike is 81' 440 ltd. the plan is to make it into something a little more appealing. sorry all you ltd lovers. so lets go straight to the pics
first the inspiration
this is where the bike was living for the past five years
something dead was in there
all washed up
the start of the teardown
i got her started!!!!! wahoo! but she didn't run all that great. could only get it to idle. any time i gave it gas, it would die.
i know i need to clean out the carbs and that will help a ton. i just wanted to make sure there wasn't something that i need to do first or something that may be wrong. i am new to the whole twin thing. to help i decided to also include a video, i hope it is loud enough. let me know if there is anything that i should do before i continue the teardown.

Your friendly reminder guy
***This is your friendly reminder to do a couple of things:***
- Back up your computer stuff.Particularly your flash drive. You may need the stuff that is on there. Also guard it with your life, somebody may try and swipe it while your away from your station.
- Check your wheel bearings. They may be going bad. If you hear a road noise while driving and it goes away when your turn, this may mean you need to swap them.
- Clean out your furnace condensation trap. Over time this can become clogged with a bunch of nasty goo. This will cause your furnace to shut off in the middle of the night, and you will nearly freeze.
No i am not saying these things happened to me, and definitely not in the past 2 days. I just want to make sure you all will be prepared IN CASE this might happen.
